The Australian government has announced Dr Stuart Minchin as the new CEO of the Bureau of Meteorology. He will join the bureau from Pacific Community, a science and technology for development organization in the Pacific region, where he has been the director general since 2020.

He previously held roles at Geoscience Australia and CSIRO, and was the principal scientist at the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment.

In addition, Dr Minchin has represented Australia in key international forums and was the country’s principal delegate to the UN Global Geospatial Information Management Group of Experts (UNGGIM) and the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO).

He has a background in environmental data management and modeling, and a track record of developing and delivering projects in environmental and natural resource management.

Dr Minchin’s appointment follows the nine-year tenure of CEO and director of meteorology Dr Andrew Johnson PSM, who led the bureau until September 2025.

He will begin at the bureau on November 10, 2025.

“I’m honored to be the next CEO and director of meteorology at the Bureau of Meteorology. The bureau has a significant responsibility to all Australians, and its staff work tirelessly to contribute to the lives and livelihoods of communities all day, every day,” Dr Minchin commented.

“I’m excited to be working with the talented and dedicated staff at the bureau to continue to deliver trusted and critical services to its customers, partners and the Australian community every day.

“The bureau is globally recognized for its work, its expert staff and its strong commitment to its customers. I look forward to representing the bureau and continuing to serve the Australian community with trusted, reliable and responsive weather, water, climate, ocean and space weather services,” he concluded.
