Chinese meteorological agency expands Antarctic weather station network

China’s 35th Antarctic expedition team has successfully installed a new automatic weather station to collect data on temperature, relative humidity, wind direction and windspeed for what the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) refers to as the Panda region of Antarctica. Located 100km (miles) from the Zhongshan research station, the newly installed automatic meteorological station can acquire long-term and continuous meteorological data which will be combined with data from other weather stations located between Zhongshan and Kunlun stations. “The newly installed automatic weather station will fill the gap of meteorological detection for the Panda section (from Zhongshan Station to Kunlun Station), which will further improve China’s meteorological observation capabilities for that section,” said Meng Shang, a member of China’s 35th Antarctic expedition team. In future, China will set up more automatic weather stations in the Panda section to provide further support for China’s weather and climate research services in the Antarctic. During the expedition, the team also carried out sounding balloon activities in the Zhongshan and Kunlun station areas to obtain temperature, windspeed, wind direction, air pressure and other meteorological information.
