The official delivery and commissioning ceremony for a new Data Direct Broadcasting Receiving System has been held in Mozambique to mark the start of improved weather forecasts in the country.

The system gathers and presents data from China’s FY-2 weather satellite. It was donated by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and the ceremony was held in Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM).

Su Jian, the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique ,and Manuela Joaquim Rebelo, vice minister of Mozambique’s ministry of transport and communications, attended the ceremony to hand over the data reception center.

Mozambique is the first African country to apply the system and will obtain a 24/7 meteorological satellite monitoring service, improving weather forecasting and disaster preparedness.

CMA and INAM signed the cooperative agreement at the 18th World Meteorological Congress in June 2019.

CMA says the system signal reception is good and the operation and data storage is smooth.

Prior to the launch, CMA experts carried out installation and deployment tasks for the system and carried out technical training focusing on applications in weather, environment and emergency response as well as disaster mitigation.
